Door hook pricing in this fishery spans more than ten to one for what is functionally the same part. Here is what we found shopping the market in September 2026, and why the spread is that wide.
The three price tiers
Net houses and commercial supply, 25 to 50 cents
The big supply houses sell hooks as a commodity in bulk. Keller Fishing Supply publishes tiered pricing on their crab pot hooks: 50 cents each under 100, 40 cents from 100 to 1,999, and 30 cents at 2,000 and up. Memphis Net & Twine sells nylon hooks by the bag of 50, running roughly 29 cents each on the small 3-1/8" and 40 cents on the large 3-3/4", dropping a few cents at ten bags.
Volume accounts buying by the case get under the published web price. Shipping is extra at every one of these, and on a 22-pound box of 500 that is not a rounding error.
Marine retail, about a dollar
Willapa Marine lists the orange Buffalo-style hook at 99 cents each. Regional sellers packaging hooks in 12-packs land around $1.25 a hook delivered.
Dock and tackle shop counters, $1.25 to $2.75
Walk into a crabbing supply shop on the Bay and a single heavy orange door hook runs $2.50. Four-packs on marketplace sites work out near $2.75 a hook once shipping is on.
Why the spread is ten to one
There are two markups between the injection molding press and your boat. A molder sells to a distributor. The distributor sells to a dealer. The dealer sells to you. Each link needs margin, and a part that costs well under a dime to mold arrives on the counter at $2.50.
None of that markup buys you a better hook. It buys inventory sitting on a shelf near the water in July, which is worth something when you need four hooks today. It is worth nothing when you are rigging 200 pots in February.
What to actually compare
- Delivered cost, not sticker. A 30-cent hook with $28 of freight on a box of 500 is a 35-cent hook.
- Center-to-center span, not overall length. The wrong span costs you more in fighting the door than a few cents a hook ever will. Most listings don't publish it.
- Section thickness. The heavy orange hooks hold up because there is material in them. A thin hook at the same price is not the same hook.
- Material. UV-stabilized polypropylene holds up to a season on deck. Unstabilized resin chalks and gets brittle.
- Where it's molded. A domestic molder can cut a different span for you. A container of imports cannot.
Where we sit
